Team Uganda

Applications for the Team Uganda Assistant Project Leader role are now open!

As part of the University’s commitment to providing meaningful volunteering opportunities and promoting social responsibility overseas we are running Team Uganda, our international volunteering project exclusively for University of Manchester students.

This is a partnership project between the University and S.A.L.V.E. (Support and Love Via Education) International, a charity based in Manchester and working in Uganda. S.A.L.V.E. works with children on the streets in Jinja, using the power of education to provide opportunities for them to leave their difficult pasts behind them and move off the streets towards a brighter future.

In summer 2015, with the support of a generous donor, 12 undergraduate student volunteers travelled to Uganda and delivered environmental, IT and community research projects and a holiday camp. In summer 2016, a second team of student volunteers and a student Team Leader returned to Jinja to deliver community research and social enterprise projects.  In summer 2017 the volunteers delivered community research projects and holiday camps.  The projects have been a great success and continue to make a real impact enriching the work of S.A.L.V.E.

The project will run again in summer 2018 from Sat 21st July – Sun 19th August.  We are looking for 14 students and an Assistant Project Leader to help S.A.L.V.E. develop their projects in two key areas:

  • Community research / mapping
  • Social enterprise

All members of the team will also jointly contribute to running a holiday camp for young people who were formerly on the streets of Uganda. The aim of the camp is to develop the young people’s knowledge, skills and talents, it will be creative and enjoyable as well as a platform for learning.

The team will be joined by 7 Ugandan volunteers who they will work alongside for the duration of the project in Jinja, as well as other members of the S.A.L.V.E. International team.
