Mildmay Institute of Health Sciences

Mildmay Institute of Health Sciences is one of the leading HIV care and treatment providers in central Uganda. Based in Uganda’s capital city Kampala MUg provides care, treatment, training, education and research for HIV/AIDS and other priority health issues.  Since its establishment, MUg has been an important player in Uganda’s HIV response, being regarded as a Centre of Excellence by the Ministry of Health. More recently it has extended HIV prevention, treatment and support to 16 districts of Central Uganda, reaching over 80,000 people living with HIV.

Volunteer placements:

  • Health and social care: medical, nursing, palliative care, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, dentistry, pharmacy, x-ray, Laboratory services, social work, counselling, care for orphans and vulnerable children, adolescent sexual and reproductive health services.
  • Business and logistics: Mass communications, IT, library, catering, finance, procurement, stores, auditing, human resources and site management.

Mildmay has strong links with the University and welcomes you to volunteer, whatever degree course you are studying or year you are in.
  • Applications are accepted all year round, and placements can be anything from one week to six months.  You could be volunteering as an individual or alongside other volunteers from other countries, or you can apply to volunteer with friends or in a small group. 
  • A pre-departure information pack is sent to all applicants. This provides details on general safety measures, transport facilities, accommodation, food, malaria prophylaxis among other key issues.
  • You will be required to raise the funds for your trip, and organise your flights, vaccinations and insurance.
  • You will receive support from the Mildmay Volunteer Coordinator in Uganda via email. Skype sessions are also organised for volunteers to discuss any issues/concerns. 
  • The placement co-ordinator is always available to answer any specific question on janet.mudoola@mildmay.org.ug
  • Students are also advised to pack personal effects for the period of stay such as clothes and toiletries.
  • Accommodation can be provided on site at the hospital. At the start of the placement, a 2 day orientation is conducted for all students, which covers expectations, the “Ugandan culture”, overview of the work of Mildmay, a site tour, key policies and guidelines for health and social workers.
  • You will be supported by the hospital’s volunteering coordinator and the relevant hospital staff depending on your placement. 
  • Your placement could involve working in the hospital, organisation / community visits, team meetings and / or project work. 
  • Costs are approximately £10 per day covering placement and accommodation fees, and may vary depending on the timing and length of placement. Please contact Mildmay Institute of Health Sciences for more information
Please contact volunteers@manchester.ac.uk who can put you in touch with Mildmay Institute of Health Sciences to request an application form.  Applications are open throughout the year but applicants are required to book 2-3 months prior to the required placement period.  Completed  placement application forms must be submitted 2-3 months before placement with the following attachments:
  • criminal bureau record
  • insurance cover
  • health declaration forms
  • the placement indemnity agreement signed by student.
