eTekkatho Digital Library

The eTekkatho project is committed to providing a free digital library of research and learning resources to students, academics and librarians in Myanmar (Burma). The project is a collaboration between The University of Manchester and participating partner institutions in Myanmar. Each year the University of Manchester staff member and eTekkatho project coordinator travels to Myanmar, taking digital resources to share with partner universities so that they can then use when teaching their students. Currently students and academics from 24 partner universities are able to access up-to-date teaching and learning resources.

The project is now expanding to include a summer volunteering project in response to requests from the Universities they work with to provide conversational English language support for students and academics at their partner universities; often the students and academics have great academic English, but struggle with the more day to day aspects of the language, and that's where University of Manchester student volunteers can help!

This year eTekkatho is therefore looking for a small group of student volunteers from the University of Manchester to travel to Myanmar and to help deliver conversational English sessions to students and academics at Loikaw University in Kayar State and Kalay University in Chin State.

  • All current University of Manchester students are welcome to apply including postgrads. We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers who have a passion for teaching and making a difference!
  • You can apply as an individual or with friends.
  • Information sessions take place in February
  • Application deadline: 27 February 2019
  • Selection: Shortlisted applicants will be invited to a telephone or face-to-face interview on 28 February and 1 March 2019

  • A return international flight and domestic flights can be booked through eTekkatho.
  • eTekkatho will apply for relevant visas and arrange accommodation in Yangon.
  • There will be a dedicated staff member from the host universities to look after volunteers. Volunteers can stay at the host universities’ student hostel free of charge. If volunteers want to stay at a hotel near by the host university at their own expense, accommodation is approx. £40 -55 per room per night (two people can share) in Loikaw and approx. £35-45 per room per night (two people can share) in Kalay. There is also the opportunity to explore local culture, customs and the beautiful countryside.
  • The total cost for this project is approximately £1,400 per volunteer, which includes visa fees, accommodation in Yangon, food, domestic flights and transport in country (£600) plus international flights (approx. £750 - 800), which you can book through eTekkatho.
  • eTekkatho also asks for a suggested (optional) fundraising donation of £150 per person towards the project.
