Student Action is a group of students who believe in working directly with people in the local community to address prominent issues in Manchester. It runs a range of projects across the city that champion a collaborative and community spirit, and give volunteers the chance to share and develop skills.
Student Action has two projects that support local elderly people - Intergen Events, Parties, & Trips, and the UoM Buddy Scheme. It usually holds parties, film afternoons, dance classes and trips throughout the year. The community really look forwards to the events and they are great fun for volunteers to get involved with as well! The UoM Buddy Scheme was set up in March 2020 as a response to Covid-19. The scheme matches student volunteers with elderly people. The volunteers ring their buddy at least once a week for a friendly chat and provide an important outside connection in an increasingly lonely situation.
Full details of the projects are available on the Student Action website.
