Staff 2nd place

Dr Richard Unwin, School of Medical Sciences

Richard has volunteered as a governor for a local primary school in Stalybridge for ten years, the last two as Chair.  He has supported the school through OFSTED visits and the recruitment of a new leadership team which has transformed the school during a period of rising pupil numbers, especially those from disadvantages backgrounds, with special needs or English as a foreign language. He is also committed to science in schools, he designs activities for fairs and gives talks and has developed a series of animations, one of which has gathered over 19,000 views.

Richard also supports a local boating lake, run by Ridge Hill Big Local Enterprises a non-for-profit enterprise which raises funds to provide opportunities for the community.  He is also an Occasional helper at his local scout group running activities for Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts, and is a volunteer helper with a local football club, AIM FC.

Richard’s volunteering aims to help to make a difference to families, and especially children, in the community to provide opportunities which they would not normally encounter.
